48-hour destination guide
48 Hours in Venice: A Neighborhood Itinerary
Pick your Venice — San Marco, Castello, Cannaregio, Dorsoduro, San Polo or the Lido — and settle in.

Venice is a city of six sestieri on islands in a lagoon, crossed by the Grand Canal. San Marco holds the Basilica and Doge’s Palace; Castello stretches east to the Arsenale and the Biennale; Cannaregio is the local north; Dorsoduro has the great museums; San Polo and Santa Croce gather around the Rialto; and Giudecca and the Lido lie across the water. Vaporetto water buses replace streets. On peak days in 2026 day-trippers paid an access fee (trial ran April to July); overnight guests are exempt. Confirm hours before you go.
