Istanbul spans two continents. The old city on the European side holds Sultanahmet’s monuments and the bazaars; across the Golden Horn, Galata and Beyoğlu are the 19th-century European quarter, with museums and nightlife; Beşiktaş has Dolmabahçe Palace on the Bosphorus; Balat and Fener are colourful old neighborhoods up the Golden Horn; and ferries cross to Kadıköy on the Asian side. Mosques close to visitors during prayers and dress modestly. Confirm hours before you go.
