48-hour destination guide
48 Hours in Austin: A Neighborhood Itinerary
Pick your Austin — Sixth Street, Rainey, South Congress, East Austin or the lake — and settle in.

Austin sits on the Colorado River, which runs through the city as Lady Bird Lake. Downtown and Sixth Street run up Congress Avenue to the Capitol and the University of Texas, with the Rainey Street bars at the east end. South Congress, Barton Springs and Zilker Park are across the river, East Austin spreads east of I-35, and The Domain is the newer hub up north. Lake Travis and the Hill Country towns, such as Fredericksburg, are a drive west. Plan on rideshare or a car beyond the center. Confirm hours before you go; we do not invent them here.
